ABOUT THE MEETING

We are pleased to host the 2nd Glasgow Life Science Symposium on Friday February 17, 2023 at the Mazumdar-Shaw Advanced Research Centre (ARC), University of Glasgow.  Our first meeting was held in the Technology and Innovation Centre (TIC), University of Strathclyde back in November, 2018 where we welcomed over 130 delegates.

In Scotland, health inequalities account for increased deaths to cardiovascular disease (CVD), cancer, obesity, and addiction which adds to the national burden of disease. The main contributor to Scottish health burden in over 65’s in deprived areas is ischemic heart disease whilst Alzheimer’s and other dementias account for health burden in least deprived areas. New avenues for drug discovery are rapidly emerging owing to significant advances in the pharmacological knowledge of drug targets. To advance the next generation of pharmaceutical drugs we need to better understand the intricacies of how drug targets behave at the molecular level. This meeting will bring basic science and industry leaders from cardiovascular and neuroscience disciplines.

The idea behind this event is to create a friendly forum for ECRs in these research areas to present their research and encourage networking! There are oral communication, flash talk and poster opportunities for ECRs to share their work. We also have prizes sponsored by BioAscent for best oral communication, flash talk and poster presentations.

We have worked hard to develop an engaging  meeting programme that will foster networking and support our ECR community. At our previous event in 2018, we held three dedicated workshops to support early career development (public engagement, grant writing and social media use in science workshops). These were popular therefore we have incorporated three new parallel workshops in careers in industry, science communications for impact and mental health in research.
